Baking-focused gathering: The Cake International Sugarcraft, Cake-Decorating and Baking Show 2012 returns to the Birmingham NEC this weekend. The three-day event will be a magnet to all cake enthusiasts, with its combination of new product displays, innovations and demonstrations, all under one roof.
The show has always been known for its extravagance and this one looks set to be no exception, with the official website promising that this year's show will be "bigger, brighter and more vibrant than ever before". Many of the key figures of the baking world including celebrities, judges and industry experts will be attending this highly-anticipated show which will feature representatives from around the world.
Sugarcrafting continues to gain in popularity, with ever more elaborate designs being created. The art is simple to learn but difficult to master so a series of workshops has been planned, led by Ann Parker and the Birmingham College of Food. The workshops are designed specifically for newcomers to the art of sugarcrafting and will offer a unique hands-on experience to participants. University College of Birmingham will also be running sugarcrafting workshops, focusing specifically on flower-paste roses and designs for Christmas and Birthday celebrations.
Several competitions will take place over the course of the festival. To suit the diverse range of visitors expected, from the complete novice to the master baker, the competitions will cover different skill levels and categories. A cupcake challenge on Friday will no doubt be extremely popular so arrive early to bag a good seat and maybe get to taste these wonderful creations. The weekend will also see the namings of the Student of the Year and Cake Decorator of the Year.
Daily demonstrations on a range of baking techniques will be sure to draw crowds to the Cake Decorator's Kitchen area of the show. Everything from understanding and using food colourings to perfect piping will be on offer from the experts, who will also provide an introduction to diploma courses in flowerpaste, sugarpaste and Royal Icing. Chocolate-lovers need not despair for there will be an entire section devoted to the much-loved treat, with several workshops and demonstrations being dedicated entirely to it. Baker Tracey Mann will also be showcasing one of her genius creations: this time it is a chocolate cake Christmas house, complete with smoking chimney!
